I can't really help when it comes to Western-style combat or weapons, but I can tell you a little about the ones from my home first. There are tooons of different types of swords, but you'll mostly see tantou, wakizashi, uchigatana and tachi - from smallest to biggest! [And as he lists the names off, he'll be showing with his hands about how big each blade is.] Oodachi can be seven feet tall, so like I said, not super common. Then there are naginata, which are basically like, a combi between spears and swords. The blade's on the end of a long shaft, so it gives the wielder even more distance, but it's weightier and harder to get accurate strikes in.
