The darkness doesn't overwrite our personality. It just... shifts our priorities, I suppose. So let's say that someone who's upset with Shirasu and his continued survival gets corrupted next. Isn't it pretty likely that they'll target him, over someone innocent?
Most of us were ready to execute him on the spot. And the other half was willing to vote for him if we didn't find the corrupted. If he's going to die anyway, then we might as well make use of him to reduce the number of unnecessary deaths.
