[to be honest, lili probably eventually stormed out of the house going "AND THE BED IS MINE, DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH IT" and then ran as if getting the last word in the conversation was all she needed to actually accomplish what she was saying but.
then she went out and about to explore the rest of the village, wandering and checking out every single nook and cranny for any type of information. she comes up with nothing, of course, because we run the damn game and know that there's nothing to find. she's still appropriately irritated when she comes back, but she's at least discovered what her power is - and let it out for everyone else to see.
she's brushing frost off her hair ornament as she comes back in, still frustrated]
Awful, awful, awful - and it'll be dark soon...
[she's VERY UNHAPPY but at least not freezing everything in sight anymore]
[In a fit of rebellion, he definitely touched the bed with one hand as soon as Lili's back was turned, but shortly after he ventured off on his own, too. He'd been out and about and had walked every single inch of the village. Repeatedly. Constantly searching, constantly watching, and when he didn't find what he was looking for he went back to the house and grabbed one of the chairs in the room to park it in front of the window.
It's facing the front and he should have seen Lili coming, but she's not what his focus is. She bypasses him as she enters the front door and his gaze is fixed on the window still. His hands are gingerly curled in his lap, awkwardly settled as though he doesn't want to move them too much, but he allows a slight glance Lili's way when she speaks up.]
Oh. You're back. [Very little interest, very little fight. But he sees the frost and blinks then.] What happened to you?
[WELL THAT WAS. UNPLEASANT. All of that was very, very unpleasant and after a while Kaoru eventually finds his way back to the house. It's probably sooner than Lili's own arrival, so by the time she returns Kaoru's seated on his bed (the sofa, because thanks Lili) and staring at the ceiling.
He doesn't wait for very long before he speaks up.]
Do you really think they thought this wasn't going to happen?
Edited (i stared at this sentence for 20 minutes trying to figure out why it looked wrong.) 2019-06-07 23:43 (UTC)
a mess again. she's got leaves in her air and appears to be wiping some dirt off her hands with a cloth as she wanders in and looks up when kaoru speaks]
... Sol told me that they didn't want it to. I believed him.
[ . . . ]
For the time being, I have the power to adjust partners. Don't tell anyone.
but lili will take her time coming back home that night, running around and doing literally everything else that she can think to do. but she has to come back eventually. when she does it appears to be with a tray that she's carefully walked over to their house and it has
two bowls
she feels safer now, because maybe her eyes are a little bit red but it's been long enough that any other evidence that she cried is gone]
[Kaoru eventually returned as well but earlier than Lili had. While she was busy making soup, he had his own adventures in doing things with his hands. It's why she enters the house with a tray and two bowls and will immediately see there's a small floral arrangement propped up somewhere that's been delicately woven together. Kaoru himself is seated on the sofa and looks up when Lili walks in.]
...that's a good thing to learn. [Learning to feed themselves is a valuable skill, and admittedly he's curious.] Who taught you?
but there are times that she needs to get his attention, and so she doesn't care. she's picking up another book on modern appliances - today is stoves - and reaches out to tap onto his shoulder in order to get an answer about some part of it but... no one's told her about the memory shares.
and the sensations - the pounding of the hot sun, the exhaustion of two days of hard labor, the burning in his throat from not having a single drop of water. the mortification, the anger, the relief that comes from having any type of water to combat against the fire in his throat.
the fear.
the book in lili's hand drops only from surprise.]
[It's been a little over a week and Kaoru's grown used to Lili's presence, at least. They've found a way to live with each other and work around one another, and he's actually found himself starting to appreciate his partner a little more. Not that he'd tell her that immediately.
It's why he thinks nothing of it when she touches his shoulder because he's accepted his role as a dictionary, and yet the touch does something he wasn't expecting.
It's a lot. It's a lot, seeing everything and not really even understanding what's happening and it actually takes a moment, it takes the red-haired girl calling Lili's name for him to even register that this is something real. It's something that's happened and the swirl of emotions is enough to make him dizzy.
None of it is real despite the fact it certainly feels real to him.
And so when Lili drops her book, Kaoru himself ends up dropping to his knees, delicate constitution a little too affected by something like that.]
That happened, and for a moment he has to process the fact that Junna and Nana are gone despite the fact they were both just here a short time ago. He leaves the main hall without any consideration for anyone else and disappears to the garden for a while.
By the time Lili comes home, she'll find two new ikebana on the table and Kaoru face-down on his half of the bed. The pillow wall is still up, and he's staring at the headboard, hardly waiting for Lili to walk further before he speaks.]
She told me about Starlight once. Before she and Junna performed for us. I didn't really understand why, but I think I get it now.
ao will hop off lili's shoulder and onto the bed, scampering up to kaoru and seeming to pull out an acorn from somewhere - between the pillows? - and then hold it out to him.
would you care for an acorn in these trying times.
lili, meanwhile will just move to sit on the bed, closer to the pillow wall as she looks him over. she's had enough time again that her eyes aren't redrimmed, but her expression is still clearly concerned.]
While Futaba's being shadow-Futaba, eventually Kaoru wanders away from the main hall. Maybe it's just a thought to get away from people, or maybe it's just because he's thinking about Nana, but he finds himself in the kitchen not long after and comes across Lili. He pauses, trying to comprehend what he's seeing.]
even though's managed to get bandaged up somehow, she's still going to cover the right side of her face with as much of her hair as possible, as if it'll hide the fact that she's clearly exhausted and has bandages over over her right eye.
it's fine.
what if she walks right in like nothing is wrong, even though she's clearly exhausted, and she just starts to head for the clothes rack they inevitably stole from the boutique to hang their clothes so she can change, even though the ninja clothes she borrowed are bloody.
[Sure is a Tuesday in this shitty, shitty town. Lili can make her way into the house and she can pretend there's nothing wrong, but Kaoru's not even on his side of the bed for once? He's actually sitting on the floor with his leg straight out and head leaning back against the wall, eyes closed for the moment.
She's given the grace of being able to enter without immediate judgment, though he cracks open an eye to watch her movements. It's hard not to notice the way her hair is styled or the way she's moving, but he allows her to get as far as the rack before she speaks up.]
...how bad is it? [It's a flat, unhappy tone. Hello, Lili.]
[Oh. Okay. Kaoru's moved from the floor to the couch since yesterday and he's seated with his broken leg sticking straight out and a book in his lap. He looks up, glancing at her as she screams in her blanket burrito.]
[It's slow-going, but at least Lili is strong enough to carry this dumb broken twink around the village. Kaoru's doing his best to stay still as they head home, leg straight out and arms around her shoulders as she piggybacks him back to their place. It's only when they're alone that he speaks up.]
Did you really trust Feral when he said it wasn't poisonous, or did you just decide you needed to find out for yourself anyway?
.... It looked like water to me - and I know that some poisons are odorless, but are they colorless too? If all the signs pointed it to being Swift Wind, then I know he couldn't have given me poison. And if it was poison, I doubt it was something that could kill me instantly from a sip - so we could've adjusted.
If Sol can give me a task to fix your leg, why couldn't he give someone another simple one for an antidote?
[that's what lili thinks.... it was still a reckless plan but]
[He's in the middle of the living room seated on the couch furiously making a flower arrangement. Lili will have felt a muddle of emotions over the last hour or two swinging from uncertainty to annoyance and settling on silence.]
...what are your thoughts on what happened today? [May as well ask.]
[well that sure is a question. Lili will be coming in just as she’s finished taking care of the farm, slipping out of her shoes as she enters their home and she pauses.]
... frustrating, but necessary and ultimately for the best.
[Later, in the village, he's wandering around and reacquainting himself with a few people but his main target seems to be missing. It's almost by sheer happenstance that he actually bumps into Lili, but his eyes widen in surprise before there's a grin.]
I've been looking for you, you know. But I imagine several others have been taking up your time as well. [Hewwo.]
